Changing what already happened

One of the most basic assumptions about intention is that it operates according to a generally accepted sense of cause and effect: the cause must always precede the effect. If A causes B, then A must have happened first. This assumption reflects one of our deepest beliefs, that time is a one-way, forward-moving progression.

Crazy ladies

Many years ago I read an article in Esquire by Nora Ephron entitled ‘Dealing with the, uh, Problem,’ about the early days of the feminine-hygiene spray business.  Ephron was investigating how Alberto-Culver managed to convince women, as a rival company had done in its advertising that her “trickiest deodorant problem isn't under her pretty little […]

NDEs: Not just delirium

There’s clearly something to this near-death experience business well beyond the ravings of a dying brain.

On becoming a grandmother

Three weeks ago, Bryan and I became grandparents. My eldest daughter and her husband have just had the most gorgeous little baby girl and like any new grandparents, we are walking around like this is the first time it has ever happened to anyone anywhere in the world.

When two or more are gathered. . .

Blood in the water

Dr Stephen Hussey, an American chiropractor and author of the forthcoming book Understanding the Heart (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2022) has a radical view of the function of the heart. The Stanford University physicist William Tiller found this out with his famous Black Box experiments, where he and a group of meditators ‘imprinted’ intention into an electronic […]

What would you be willing to fight for?

Ukraine is stirring us out of our stupor. The West suddenly has had a ringside seat, watching a European country fighting for its life. The Ukrainians are not frightened so much as outraged. Somebody is trying blowing up their new democracy – their country, their towns, their home, their relatives.

What Ukraine is teaching us

Just a short month ago, most of us in the West were deeply divided over how to best to handle Covid or how terrible the other political party was. Or Brexit or the EU or climate change or cultural wars over issues like gender. You name it, we argued over it.

A salutary lesson: never again

We in the West are horrified to discover that most people in Russia don’t know that their military are raining bombs on Ukrainian civilians, including maternity hospitals and psychiatric wards, preventing them from leaving or even gaining access to food, water, heat or shelter.
