Connecting deeply with life

This week my family had some joyous news when our eldest daughter Caitlin got engaged to a lovely guy. Amid the celebrations, I paused to reflect on the journey of this extraordinary young woman, who appears to have all her ducks in a row at just 23.

It was not always this way. I watched in fascination as Caitlin transformed from a shy and tentative 16-year-old teenager who had trouble fitting into various schools to a confident young woman, completely in charge of her life and her future.

I've observed time and time again as she aimed high – almost too high – but got exactly what she'd hoped for. Against all odds (and predicted grades) she managed to gain entry to one of the top secondary schools and then one of the UK's top universities.

In the midst of a deep recession, and with little experience, she got headhunted by one of the West's top digital marketing firms and within a year was promoted and in charge of a team whose client is one of the giants of British industry. During university, she'd also managed to find Mr. Right and they’re now in the process of buying her first flat.

What is the secret of her success? It wasn't academics per se; she was a good student, but by no means a straight-A scholar. It wasn't a pushy sense of entitlement or naked-claw ambition. She is a kind person with an innately straight moral compass and an air of professionalism, but not at all costs, and certainly not at cost to anyone else.

I can only describe Caitlin’s genius as a sense of deep and pure connection with herself and everyone around her. She has an extraordinarily developed emotional intelligence in the way she relates to the world that ensures she connects with everyone and everything in her life on a deeper, bonded level. She has learned to read the subtle signals in every situation and to control the subtle signals she is giving out. She understands the hidden connections between us.

Probably because of Caitlin, learning to connect more deeply with everyone around us and with our own lives is something that I’ve studied for a number of years, and I’m now convinced that we all learn to harness our innate ability to create a deeper relationships with life, with a little practice.

I created a whole program about it. It started life as a live teleseminar, 90 minutes long. Today, it is an MP3 audio file with course notes and the like.
