A member of my Intention Masterclass, Gina Lavery has nominated her friend, Mary Beth Zolik- Smith, aged 67, from Toledo, Ohio, in the US for an Intention of the Week. Here is her story as told by Gina:

“Mary Beth began her challenges with non-hodgkin large B cell lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system) in 2012. She underwent standard of care chemotherapy, and about four years later had a relapse.

“At this time, she retired from her post as a popular radio morning show co-host where she was the calming voice who woke up the Glass City (Toledo, Ohio) for decades. She then underwent an autologous stem cell transplant. The autologous stem cell transplant did not produce the response needed to live a life free of non-Hodgkin large B cell lymphoma.

“She, her husband and physicians continued to search for the best treatment options for her. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society assisted her and her husband to find physicians conducting a clinical trial utilizing Car-t Cell therapy.  She received the Car-t cell therapy in 2016 at the Cleveland Clinic and achieved full remission!  She then fully celebrated her youngest son graduating college, her daughter marrying a wonderful man, and began to enjoy retirement with her husband.

“In 2020, her next health challenge was myelodysplastic syndrome, which is a known side effect from the chemotherapy she received back in 2012. The next challenge was a donor bone marrow transplant.  She began to work at preparing for the BMT and received the donor bone marrow, shipped from Germany on January 12, 2021.”

“She is currently recovering with the assistance of her husband and health care workers of the Cleveland Clinic.  She often thinks of herself as a pioneer and is choosing to keep moving forward.”
