Help him to overcome a chronic infection in his leg

A member of my community has nominated her husband, John Davies, aged 72, from Johannesburg, South Africa for an Intention of the Week. Here is his story as told by his wife:

“On February 1st 2021, my husband John stumbled and fell down a staircase in a local shopping center, severely shattering numerous bones in his left lower leg.

“He was hospitalized immediately and, the following day, underwent an emergency operation, in which the affected bones were set and two large metal plates inserted to provide stability.

“The operation went well, but an infection had started close to the bone next to the larger plate. John has had regular follow-up appointments with his surgeon and the infection was treated with antibiotics for a good part of the 10 months that have passed since.

“John is currently on antibiotics and although walking without aid, his lower leg is slightly swollen, inflamed and unable to take normal strain. His next appointment with the surgeon is on 11th January 2022, where a final decision will be made whether an operation to remove the larger plate and clean out the infection will take place.

Due to John’s age and the severe damage to his bones, the operation is risky and John would like to avoid it if at all possible.

“John is a well-respected jazz musician, composer, arranger, musical director and educator and is a valued member of the community. He has mentored numerous young musicians, who continue to love and admire him.

“John is also a loving husband with a huge heart, father of four children and grandfather of five. On behalf of my husband, our family and friends, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for considering John for an intention of the week.”
